Happy Trails Grandpop Whistler!!

March 5th: Dropping Grandpop off at Springer Mountain

For years, my Father-in-Law has been planning his grand adventure: an AT Thru Hike!!! This is a BIG DEAL!! It takes years to prepare and plan for it.... it is an over 2000 mile hike from Georgia to Maine. We were all super excited to see grandpop off, so we planned a BIG Monk family trip to Springer Mountain!! We had an amazing time and discovered that we all LOVE to vacation together!!

Brantley peeking over the counter looking for more Donuts!

Katy Ellis eating ALLLLLL the donuts!

Had to take Grandpop the day before to the AT Hiker Center to get "checked in"... and did the 1000 Step Hike to Amicalola Falls. Breathtaking!!

We had rented cabin off of  VRBO, and it was just perfect!! Came complete with its very own trout pond!

I think I see a lil fishy!!

We decided to make the whole weekend even MORE festive, and turn it into Richard and Brian's birthday celebration!! Mr. Bill and Ms. AnnMarie cooked up an amazing steak supper complete with birthday cake!! Magical night spent around the fire with family!!

Katy Ellis and Blakely giving out a little "trail magic" at Woody gap!!

On Sunday, it was time to drop Grandpop off on the trail and set him free!! We hiked the 1 mile trail to the top of Springer Mountain with him to see him sign the guest book and take some pictures!!

The best hiker of the day was Katy Ellis!! She was 1) the pace setter 2) she danced and sang ALL the way up the mountain and 3) she did all 2 miles of hiking all on her own!! She was a little dynamo!!
My favorite thing she said that day while hiking: "I feel the wind, but I cannot fly!"
Richard and I were dying laughing!!! She is hilarious!!

Signing in at Springer Mountain as an OFFICIAL AT Thru Hiker!!

So so so proud of GrandPop Whistler!! I KNOW that he will finish what he started, and come back with some awesome tales to tell!!

When we got back to the parking lot, we said a prayer of blessing and safety over GrandPop as he hikes. Then we hugged him, cried and said our final farewells. So excited to follow his exciting adventure via his blog!!
